Founder WURI Foundation
Globally, Dong-sung Cho is Founding Dean of NeoHorizon School of Management, Dubai, UAE, and chairs the Board of the SDG Management School, Geneva, Switzerland, He is Honorary President of Hanseatic League of Universities, the society of 120 universities in the world. He founded and chairs the WURI Foundation, which annually publishes the World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) Report.
In Korea, he is Chair Professor of aSSIST University, and Professor Emeritus at Seoul National University Business School. He also chairs the Institute for Industrial Policy Studies. He is Honorary Consul General of Finland in Korea, and also Dean of the Corps of Honorary Consuls in Korea.
He received a doctoral degree from Harvard Business School in 1977, and worked at Boston Consulting Group in Tokyo and Gulf Oil Corporation in Pittsburgh. For his second doctoral degree, he is now in the Ph.D. program with AI major at aSSIST University.
In academia, he was Dean and Professor of Strategy at Seoul National University Business School, and President of Incheon National University. He taught as a visiting professor at Harvard Business School, University of Michigan, Duke University, INSEAD, Helsinki School of Economics (now Aalto University), University of Sydney, the University of Tokyo, and Peking University.
In the public and social sectors, he was Commissioner of Korea Trade Commission, and was Chair of the Committee for Government Innovation Management in the Korean government. He was Co-Chair of the Committee for Synergistic Cooperation between Big and Small Corporations jointly with Prime Minister of Korea, and was the standing member of the Presidential Council for National Competitiveness of Korea.
In the social service, he chaired Korea Support Committee for the International Vaccine Institute, the UN-created research lab for vaccines needed for children in developing, was on the Board of Directors at Korea National Opera Company. He was Director General of Patriot Ahn Jung-Geun Memorial & Museum.
He has published over 90 books and monographs, and 150 research articles in major journals on strategic management, international business, and management design. He concentrated his research into the semiconductor industry, the general trading company, and national competitiveness.
He developed the Nine-Factor Model, the Subject-Environment-Resources-Mechanism (SER-M) Paradigm, the Mechanism-Based View, the Combination-Permutation-Time (CPT) Model, and the Weight-Sequence (WS) Model. In August 2021, he co-authored the book titled “Strategic management in the AI era.”
He is a frequent speaker in international conferences such as Davos Forum, World Knowledge Forum, and QS Conference. He has a pleasant memory of chairing a seminal debate between Michael Porter and Michael Sandel in 2015 on the issue of balance between market and government.
In 2007, President of Korea conferred him “The Order of Service Merit-Yellow Stripes.” President of Finland knighted him with “The Knight, First Class of the Order of the White Rose of Finland”.
The recent poll of business executives and managers placed him on the top in the list of “Representative Management Gurus” in Korea. He received Honorary Doctoral Degrees from Inje University and Aalto University.
