Insurance, payment, and visa
EU/EEA/Switzerland
- Bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and an ID/passport.
Outside the EU/EEA (including Asia and Oceania)
- You can still receive medical care in Hungary, but you will usually need to pay unless your travel/health insurance covers it.
- Bring: passport (plus visa/residence permit if applicable), your insurance policy details, and the insurer’s assistance phone number.
Visa status
- Being on a visa (or visa-free) does not prevent you from requesting medical help; the main difference is typically how the costs are covered (insurance vs. self-pay).
